About the Project

When and why do women derogate other women? Derogation and social exclusion are bullying tactics employed by women as a form of social competition which can have severe consequences. Bullying has been linked to eating disorders, depression, and suicide in young women.

It is often surprising that derogation based on women’s appearance and behaviours are made by other women. Yet, women are often the target of bullying, gossip, and social exclusion by other women, as a form of indirect aggression (Vaillancourt, 2013; Vaillancourt & Sharma, 2011). So, why do women do this?

Current theories suggest that women will be more aggressive towards other women when they are competing with one another. Therefore, we advance that female-female indirect aggression would be more common when there is greater competition among women.

Recent research has found that economic inequality fosters more competition among people, in both men and women (Cheng et al., 2023; Krupp & Cook, 2018). However, men and women use different competitive strategies. In women, status-based competition is nonviolent, which include enhancing appearance (i.e., wearing more make-up, revealing clothing) and indirect aggression (e.g., gossip, bullying, social exclusion). Although the link between inequality and men’s competition is well-established, there has been comparatively little research investigating how economic inequality impacts women’s competition. This studentship will bridge this gap and investigate the impact of inequality on women’s competition.

We advance that in areas with more economic inequality, women be more likely to try and (a) make themselves more competitive, or (b) bring down their rivals. Recent research focusing on women’s appearance has supported this theory – women post more ‘sexy selfies’ in areas with higher inequality (Blake & Brooks, 2018; 2019). Yet, how inequality relates to women’s competitive tactics to ‘bring down’ rivals remains untested.

This leads us to our question – Are there more ‘mean girls’ in areas with high economic inequality? That is, are women more (indirectly) aggressive towards other women when there is greater inequality? Will there be more female-female derogation and social exclusion in areas of high inequality? The successful candidate’s research will investigate the link between economic inequality and indirect aggression, and how this relationship has changed over time with the rising levels of inequality worldwide.

About the studentship

Through this funded studentship, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to learn and gain experience using state-of-the-art research methods, such as virtual reality, analysing big datasets, and using motion capture technology. The Centre for Culture and Evolution at Brunel University London is offering 3 funded PhD studentships to study the origins and spread of spiritual beliefs. Human cultural capacities are uniquely expressed in spiritual belief, practice, and community. Our project applies cultural evolutionary theory (e.g., The Secret of Our Success, Henrich, 2017) to study how spiritual but not religious (SBNR) practitioners seek and build spiritual community, and how those communities shape the learning of new beliefs. Our project combines robust quantitative methods with context-rich observations and interviews, while engaging with participants and community groups to hear what our findings mean to them. We will test predictions derived from cultural evolutionary theory via a case study in the town of Glastonbury, England–a nexus of spirituality, home to diverse SBNR communities, and a destination for thousands of spiritual pilgrims annually.

Based in the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences and co-funded by the “Spirits and Sources” Templeton Foundation Research Grant, this studentship offers a full-time annual London rate stipend estimated at £20,662 plus Home/EU tuition fees, for a maximum of 36 months.

The Department of Life Sciences holds a Silver Athena SWAN Award and is committed to equality of opportunity and advancing women’s careers.

The start date will be 02 January 2024.

Overview

The PhD studentship will involve a mixed-methods approach, including fieldwork in the town of Glastonbury, England using interview and observational methods.

The successful candidate will be supervised by an expert interdisciplinary team of researchers at the Centre for Culture and Evolution, Brunel University, who will provide full training for the research:

- Dr Michelle A Kline (Principle Investigator)

- Dr Aiyana Willard (Co-Principle Investigator)

- Dr Lora Adair (Co-Investigator)

- Dr Matthew Gervais (Co-Investigator)

For informal discussions, please contact Dr Michelle A Kline (ku.ca.lenurb|enilk.ellehcim#ku.ca.lenurb|enilk.ellehcim ).
